NESSEBUR
The town of NESSEBUR is among the most frequented Bulgarian resorts. It is
located at the Black Sea coast and on the rocky Peninsula of Nessebur,
picturesquely jutting out into the sea. It is 38 km northeast of Bourgas and
about 100 km south of Varna. Its magnificent beaches are preferred, because
of the finest sand at the Bulgarian Black Sea coast; the romantic dunes and
the freshness of vegetation flanking the sea.

Nessebur is also one of the oldest European towns. Traces of the life of
Thracians from the 2nd millennium B.C. can be seen on the Peninsula. A town
by the name of Messambria emerged during the Hellenic colonization (circa
6th century B.C.). During the 1st century B.C. it became part of the Roman
Empire. During the 4th-6th century period it was among the most important
towns along the Black Sea coast. From 812 it has been within the confines of
the Bulgarian state. Starting from the 9th century, the settlement had begun
to be mentioned under the name of Nessebur. In the 12th-14th centuries it
was alternatively part of Bulgaria and of Byzantium. During the 14th
century, when it was part of Bulgaria, the town experienced its greatest
economic and cultural flowering. From that period are also the most
interesting and remarkable cultural and historical monuments. They can be
seen in the old part of Nessebur, which has been declared an architectural,
historical and archaeological reserve and has been included in the List of
the world heritage under UNESCO protection. Particularly noteworthy are the
churches of Nessebur
